Overcoming the fear of the unknown

Better than the usual grief than unusual joy

/ Proverb

One was caught by villain-robber and sentenced to death. And I offered him the Sultan to make a choice: be hanged, or step outside the black door to the unknown. Rogue chose to be hanged. And for a few seconds before hanging the thief pleaded, "Tell me, what's behind the door, the sultan?". "Behind the door - free, but you, like all before you chose obscurity rope" - replied the Sultan.

The fear of the unknown, can be said, the most popular fear, because the fear of death in the long run it and fear of the unknown and fear of the dark, too. I even tell you more, often fear - it is a derivative of the unknown. Aristotle said that "fear - this expectation of evil", and wait - is unknown.

Fear of the unknown arises from the fantasies and judgments are not based on human experience. Human consciousness is accustomed to give all unknown negative coloration.

In principle, it is understandable and can be explained in terms of evolution. Because for hundreds of thousands of years this behavior has contributed to human survival. After all, in the real world beyond the black door often lurked danger. Although, of course, those who are not afraid to look behind the black door - opened America, Antarctica in exchange for bonuses and resources.

As a psychologist I quite often have to deal with the fact that people want to deal with the fear of the unknown. For example, it is often the case in public speeches. The man thinks: "I do not know how I perceive others, and all of a sudden ...". If the subconscious mind could talk, we would have heard something like this monologue: "Do not put out. It's so safe. Let's leave it like it is. Here everything is familiar and tested. enough for survival. And there do not know what will happen. Are you sure it will not do harm? No? Then do not put out. "

And if a person, overcoming himself, still gets up and begins to speak, the subconscious include "deer fever": constrained by the muscles, including the jaw with the tongue, throat intercepts, palms sweating, breathing becomes difficult, man loses the idea.

After this unsuccessful attempt subconscious inner voice whispers: "And I say, but you did not listen", thus trying to secure the fear of any action that can not bring a certain result.

If a person gives in to this fear,

  • it can later begin to be afraid to ask a stranger something, because that can predict for his reaction,
  • afraid to make decisions, because not sure that they are correct,
  • and then begins to fear and to go out.

In general, the greater the uncertainty, the greater the fear. Fear - it is a normal reaction, it is designed to protect human, to keep him alive. But when fear is not justified, when it prevents a person to live and work, it is no longer the norm, and with this need to do something about it.

So what to do?

Let's take the example of public speaking analyze, as it is possible to overcome this fear of. If you have to perform before an audience, and your inner voice and imagination you draw gloomy pictures of failure, you say to yourself, "Stop." Take a break, then sit and imagine that after an event has already passed one day. That is, for example, performance on Monday, 14 and you say today Wednesday 16. And now you tell how it went very well, you were, you all listened attentively, supported, and you are happy with the situation. Ideally, we must speak out loud and someone.

Why this technique works well?

Because to tell you this, it is necessary to present all the positive images. You like to train your unconscious, you give it a positive experience. This removes uncertainty principle.

It seems like such an event has been and gone well, so that our subconscious mind begins to believe that there is nothing wrong with that, and does not supply then the body hormones fear and stress in large numbers - which in turn cancels the "deer fever" and allows a person to act at a good level. Well, it is secured in a positive manner and subsequent performances go more smoothly.

This exercise can also be used with any phobias and fears. Well it works with agoraphobia and social phobia.

This technique will help you to make rational use of our subconscious programs and manage the emotions that will allow you to operate most effectively.
